From Langudoc in France, using the appellation Coteaux du Langudoc. Former real estate agent, Marlene Soria stumbled across the property while sowing it to a client in the 1980s. Marlene decided to buy it herself and move there to retire and escape the world. The domaine is on the slopes of Saint-Paroire between Beizers and Montpellier.
Instead of settling down with a quiet life, Marlene ended up clearing up the scrub-land surrounding the house and planted 17 hectares of vines, mostly Syrah plus some Grenache and Mourvedre. Later on a few white vines were planted with Rolle, Roussanne, Viognier, Ugni Blanc and Terret. Everything has been farmed organically since day 1. Today the estate covers 25 hectares, of which 23 is planted with red grapes.
It is a Mediterranean climate with beautifully hilly vineyards with clay-limestone soil’s composed of friable rocks and hard pebbles. Yields are very low giving concentrated juices. The wine making is done in concrete vats, painted pink, and then followed by a long maturation in barrels and then usually a further decade of aging. Marlene’s philosophy is only to sell mature wines ready to drink. Domaine Peyre Rose makes 4 different cuvees – Marlene, Syrah-Leone, Clos de Cistes and Oro
Marlene
The entry level cuvee from Domaine Peyre Rose. An equal blend of Syrah and Grenache plus a small amount of tempranillo. Very fragrant.
Syrah-Leone
Mostly Syrah with a touch of Mourvedre. A wide, greedy and exceptional brightness. Velvety and accessible due to the lower acidity because of the stony soil. Notes of black fruit, truffle and chocolate.
Clos des Cistes
A wine with more depth and complexity, with a solid tannin structure. From Syrah with a touch of Grenache. The vines for this cuvee come from a slightly cooler location and from a soil with hard pebbles located at a higher altitude, giving a higher level of acid.
Oro
The white cuvee from Domaine Peyre Rose. A blend of Rolle, Roussanne and Viognier aged for several years in vats. Shows a perfect balance between creaminess and tension.
